Kanji (漢字) 

Kanji (漢字) are Chinese characters used in Japanese writing. Each kanji usually has a meaning, like “water” or “tree,” and one or more readings, which are the ways we say the character in Japanese. In this beginner section, we focus on simple, everyday kanji that you will see very often. Learning these first characters gives you confidence and helps you understand real Japanese signs, menus, and messages.

People and Relationships

人 – person
Think of a standing person. You’ll see it in words like 日本人 (Japanese person). Remember: 人 = a human being.

男 – man
Combines “field” and “power.” Use it for male people, like 男の子 (boy). It clearly marks a masculine meaning.

女 – woman
Looks like a person sitting. It appears in 女の人 (woman) and 女の子 (girl). When you see 女, think “female.”

子 – child
Picture a small child with arms out. It’s used in 子ども (child) and 男の子 / 女の子. It often adds a cute or young feeling.

父 – father
Stylized picture of hands. You’ll see it in お父さん (father). Use it when talking about dads or someone’s father.

母 – mother
Looks a bit like a face with eyes. It appears in お母さん (mother). Use it for moms or a person’s mother.

友 – friend
Think of two hands helping each other. It is in 友だち (friend). When you see 友, think of friendship and support.

生 – life / birth / student
Used in 学生 (student) and 先生 (teacher). It carries the idea of “life” or “to live.” Remember it as the energy of living and learning.

先 – ahead / previous
Means “ahead” or “before.” In 先生 (teacher), it’s the person who goes ahead in learning. Think of someone in front, leading the way.

Nature and Elements

日 – sun / day
Looks like the sun. It’s in 日本 (Japan) and 日よう日 (Sunday). Think of bright daylight and the passing of days.

月 – moon / month
Picture the crescent moon. It appears in 月よう日 (Monday) and 一か月 (one month). Connect it with time and the night sky.

火 – fire
Looks like flames rising. It’s in 火よう日 (Tuesday). Think of heat, flames, and anything burning.

水 – water
Suggests flowing water. You’ll see it in 水 (water) and 水よう日 (Wednesday). Imagine rivers, rain, and drinks.

木 – tree / wood
Looks like a tree with branches and roots. It’s in 木よう日 (Thursday). Think of forests, wood, and nature.

金 – gold / money / metal
Connected to money and value. It appears in お金 (money) and 金よう日 (Friday). Remember it as something shiny and precious.

土 – earth / soil
Represents ground or soil. It’s in 土よう日 (Saturday). Think of the earth you stand on or plant in.

山 – mountain
Looks like three peaks. It’s in 富士山 (Mt. Fuji). Picture tall mountains and hiking trails.

川 – river
Three lines of flowing water. It appears in 川 (river) and many place names. Imagine water moving between banks.

海 – sea / ocean
Combines “water” with “everywhere.” It’s in 海 (sea) and 海外 (overseas). Think of wide blue oceans and beaches.

Body Parts

口 – mouth
A simple square opening. It’s used for speaking, eating, and in words like 入口 (entrance). Think of an opening or mouth.

目 – eye
Looks like an eye. It appears in 目 (eye) and 目的 (goal). Connect it with seeing and looking.

手 – hand
Represents a hand. It is in 上手 (skillful) and 手紙 (letter). Think of actions you do with your hands.

足 – foot / leg / enough
Used for legs and feet, and also “enough.” It’s in 足 (foot) and 満足 (satisfaction). Picture walking or standing.

心 – heart / mind
Shows feelings and thoughts. It appears in 心 (heart) and 安心 (relief). Think of emotions and your inner self.

耳 – ear
Looks like an ear from the side. It is in 耳 (ear). Connect it with listening and hearing carefully.
